Personalize your home decor by creating your own floor lamp. Our step-by-step instructions will walk you through the process.
Build this unique floor lamp in just seven easy steps. The natural wood stand offers a neutral look that can add a simple touch to any room.
Get started by building the base, then finish the shade as desired. We wrapped ours in a length of twine, but feel free to decorate however you'd like. Consider using stencils, embroidery, fabric, or any other embellishments to fit your style.
What You Need:
2x2x78-inch piece of wood
1-1/2x1-1/2x16-inch pieces of wood (4)
Drill
2-1/2-inch wood screws and washers
Wood glue
2x2x26-inch piece of wood
Bracket or shelf support
Lamp kit
Wire cutters
16-inch-diameter drum lampshade
Roll of twine
Hot-glue gun
Step 1: Mark Screw Placement
Place the four 16-inch pieces of wood for the lamp base around the 78-inch lamp stand. With a pencil, make two marks for screw holes on the outside of each base piece. Line up the first mark with the upright stand; line up the second with the base piece that will abut it. Position the marks at slightly different levels on each base piece so the screws will not hit each other.
Step 2: Drill Holes
Drill through marked areas. Attach base pieces to the upright lamp stand and each other with wood screws and washers.
Step 3: Position Top of Stand
Position the 26-inch piece of wood on the top of the stand so about 4 inches extends off the back. Predrill holes for the screws. Apply wood glue to the top of the lamp stand. Screw the arm to the stand.
Step 4: Mark Bracket Placement
Mark bracket placement and drill holes to attach the bracket to the underside of the lamp arm and the inside of the stand.
Step 5: Run Wiring
Drill a hole in the lamp arm where it intersects the lamp-arm base. Run the wiring through the hole and along the top of the arm piece. Drill another hole where you want the lampshade to hang; run the wiring down through the hole. Assemble the lamp kit according to manufacturer instructions. Attach the socket to the wiring.
Step 6: Cover Lampshade
To cover the lampshade, begin hot-gluing the twine at the seam at the top of the shade. Run a bead of glue and attach the twine. Continue circling the shade until covered. Let dry before hanging.
